The throwing of confetti over a newly married couple is a long-standing tradition to celebrate their marriage. However, until a few years ago it was usually the guests who brought it with them to a wedding. Now, couples like to supply the confetti at their wedding to ensure they have the colours and type of confetti they want.
Shropshire Petals grows and produces natural petal confetti on their Shropshire farm, and today they are here to tell you all you need to know about confetti.
What is Confetti?
When you think about confetti, do you think about heart and horseshoe shaped paper, bubbles, synthetic shapes and words or natural petals? Traditionally rice was thrown, now it comes in a variety of different forms.
What Type of Confetti Will My Wedding Venue Allow?
The majority of venues and churches now only allow natural petal confetti to be thrown, as it is 100% biodegradable and eco-friendly. It is not harmful to animals — it is just like blossom falling from a tree. Reception venues might allow you to use other types for decorating tables, but, as you can see, natural petals are also perfect for this.
How Do I Choose Which Petals to Have?
We have a variety of petals in different sizes and an eclectic range of colours. We always recommend smaller petals such as delphinium and wildflower for throwing, as they are small and light, creating a delicate flutter as they shower a couple. Larger petals, such as rose and hydrangea, are heavy and fall quickly. If there are particular colours you want which are only available in larger petals we recommend that you create a mix of smaller and larger petals. This will give your confetti photo a fantastic textured look as well as you having the colours you want.
Can I Choose a Variety of Colours?
Our pick and mix tool allows you to select the colours you want. You can choose colours to match or contrast your wedding theme. The pick and mix tool enables you to select a mix we have already created, or you can make your own unique mix by selecting from different petal types.
How Much Confetti Do I Need?
Choosing how much confetti to have to ensure you have enough to get a great photo can be difficult. We have developed our confetti calculator where you can enter your wedding details, including how many guests you are having and what you want your petals for, and it will then tell you how much you will need to order. For throwing confetti, normally half of your guests will throw it (usually the ladies), which will also give you an idea of how much to order. The calculator will also work out how much you need for decorating tables, creating petal paths and for flower girls.
How Can I Display My Confetti?
You can be as creative as you want when it comes to displaying your confetti for guests to then take when it’s time to throw. We have some lovely packaging options to choose from:
Shropshire Box
This stunning box comes with 25 cones and plenty of confetti to fill them. Cones are easy for guests to hold and they give each guest the perfect portion of petals to throw.
Baskets
The Bo-Peep basket is a large basket which comes with 20 cones and two litres of confetti.
The Flower Girl basket is a cute basket which is perfect for flower girls to hold and to offer petals to your guests.
The Confetti Basket is a large basket which comes with five litres of confetti to fill the basket.
Confetti Pails
Choose from silver or cream, these pails are perfect for placing on a table outside your venue or for bridesmaids/flower girls to hold. They come with two litres of confetti.
Confetti Cones
You can buy confetti cones on their own, which come with a litre of confetti for you to place in containers of your own. For a personal touch you can even have them personalised with your names and wedding date too.
You can also display your confetti in any other containers you think will work with your wedding theme. We love displaying it in vintage suitcases, old wooden wheelbarrows or carts; we’ve placed cones in the front of a vintage bike and even on a set of vintage scales. You can make a confetti bar and let guests choose their petals themselves. Be imaginative!
What Else Can I Do With Natural Petals?
Confetti isn’t just for throwing; it can be used for decorating tables, venues and cakes. Use it in quirky photos, on your table plan, make petal bath bombs as favours, or even place some on a table with a sign for guests to spell out messages and take a photo as an alternative guest book idea.

Tips For Getting a Wow Factor Confetti Photo
Now you have all you need to know about choosing your confetti and what else you can do with it, the most important thing is to get that wow factor confetti photo. Here are our tips for making sure the moment is magical:
Choose the Right Petals
As we have already mentioned, smaller petals work better when thrown.
Choose the Right Colour Mix
Consider where your photo will be taken — is the background light or dark? Choose colours that will stand out against the background i.e. light colours against a dark church wall, and bold, bright colours in an open space.
What Type of Confetti Shot Do You Want?
Do you want a shot with lots of confetti or just a delicate flutter? Depending on what you want will depend on how much you will need to order.
Discuss Your Shot with Your Photographer
Make sure they know what you want so that you don’t need to worry about it on the big day. Ask them for ideas, as they will have taken plenty of confetti photos before.
Make Sure Your Guests Know How to Throw
This might sound simple but you only get one chance to capture that perfect shot, and the key is in the throwing. Delegate a bridesmaid or usher to organise the shot by asking your guests to stand close to each other and throw their confetti as high as they can to create a perfect flutter — you don’t want guests throwing confetti directly at your faces!
