Without at doubt Christina Perri’s ‘A Thousand Years’ was the most popular wedding first dance song of 2016. It’s easy to hear why with lyrics such as ‘I have loved you for a thousand years, I’ll love you for a thousand more’. Coming in a close second, even though he’s taken a break from the limelight this year, Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ has been as popular as ever (both these songs made it into the top first dance songs 2017 list too).
As always, some timeless classics are still up there in the top 10, plus a couple of newbies. The standout first song request in 2016 though has not necessarily been the song, but more the style of song. Most couples have preferred stripped back, live, acoustic versions of their first dance songs.

More Song Ideas
At the beginning of the year I predicted what I thought would be 2016’s most popular wedding first dance song choices. There were some all time classics, along with a couple of songs which made 2015’s list and showed no signs of slowing down. I also included some songs from the most popular artists in the charts at the time, as well as legendary artists such as David Bowie who had unfortunately recently passed away, bringing about a resurgence in his music.
Here are my predictions which didn’t make it into the top 10, but you may still like to consider them for your first dance song…
The Wedding Song — David Bowie
At Last — Etta James
How Long Will I Love You — Ellie Goulding
Ho Hey — The Lumineers
Catapult — Jack Savoretti
Blank Space — Taylor Swift
(A bit of a curveball but a fun twist, and Taylor’s last album sold 8.6 million copies!)
