If you don’t fancy a traditional long wedding veil or you want something to add a bit of modern chic to your wedding day style, a birdcage veil is the answer. Although they were popular in the 50s you don’t have to be planning a vintage wedding to wear one. Birdcage Veils work with most types of theme and dress (long and short), and since they come in a variety of different lengths and sizes, you can shape them according to your style preference.

Birdcage veils can be made of French, Russian or English style netting, with the size of the squares or diamonds in the netting differentiating the three types. French has the tightest weave and is softer, while Russian netting is stiffer and the English (also known as Merry Widow netting) is the largest.

Here are some of the different birdcage veil styles available…

Blusher Veils

A simple blusher veil can be very effective when complemented with sparkly drop earrings. By just covering your eyes it gives off an air of effortless chic and mystery.

Bandeau Veils

Bandeau styles sit across the face, secured on either side. This can either be simple clips or sparkly vintage inspired combs, depending on the look you are going for.

Cage Veils

The classic longer or cage veil frames the whole face and is usually attached to a smaller hat or feather fascinator. They look great with contemporary dresses, particular shorter ones. Many styles also have detachable veils, so you can show off the pretty hair accessory once you take off the veil.

Statement Birdcage Veils

Why not go all out with a flamboyant flower attached to your veil. A statement veil can really set off a simple dress beautifully.

The beauty of birdcage veils is that you can shape them according to your preferences. Wear it down for the ceremony, then lift up and out for the reception.

I’d love to know if you are wearing a birdcage veil on your wedding day, and why you chose it rather than a traditional, long one.
