If you are looking for something different to a traditional wedding cake, a wedding cake of cheese is a perfect option. As well as looking fantastic, having a cheese wedding cake means you can offer delicious cheeses served with some beautiful cut meats, crackers, grapes, olives and bread, for your guest to help themselves to, and it should also work out cheaper than paying per person for a buffet.
This week The Wedding Community was sent some amazing samples of cheese from The Cheese Shed, who provide cheese stack wedding cakes.

Cheese Varieties
Now, we love cheese at The Wedding Community (nearly as much as chocolate!), so we were so excited about trying these cheeses. We tried…
Devon Blue
An excellent blue cows’ cheese with a moist, slightly crumbly texture. Made by Robin Congdon of Ticklemore Cheese, on his farm by the banks of the River Dart. This was our favourite cheese and would work wonderfully with a nice glass of red!
Quicke’s Extra Mature Cheddar
The cheddar is matured slowly on wooden shelves (this one for at least 18 months), wrapped in muslin cloth, giving a real depth and complexity of flavour. The old fashioned rind that develops using this method is the hallmark of a well-matured traditional cheddar.
Sharpham Elmhirst
Similar to a Vignotte, it has a surprisingly light texture and delicate flavour if eaten young (2-3 weeks). Alternatively, if matured for 4-6 weeks it becomes richer and full bodied.
White Nancy
A sweet and creamy cheese with a white, bloomy rind. These beautiful small truckles (about 4″ across and 3″ high) have a fabulous texture.
Sharpham
This is one of the cheese family known as ‘mould-ripened’, and it’s best thought of as Sharpham’s take on brie.
Cheese Cake Options
The Cheese Shed offers different options for your wedding cake.
Off The Peg
Your starting point is their range of off-the-peg cakes. They cater for numbers from 25 up to around 160. Each one has been specially designed to give a nice balance of flavours and cheese types, plus a satisfying shape.
The Cakebuilder
The world’s first online cheese cake builder enables you to design, build and order your own bespoke wedding cheese cake. You simply choose the cheese and the size of round you would like in the stack from the comprehensive list of around 80 different options, and drag them onto the stack builder. You can have up to eight cheeses in the stack. The cheese rounds start at 4.5cm x 4cm (80g) and increase in size up to 33cm x 8cm (8kg).
The Cakebuilder is so easy to use, and as you add the cheese to the stack builder, the contents and price appears on the right so you can see exactly how much your cake will cost. You can remove and add cheeses as you wish.
Once you have built your cake, The Cheese Shed also offers decoration packs for £35. Some examples of the decorations are leaves, flowers, pearl strings, small mirrors and pearl pins. This is a really great way of being able to personalise your cheese stack wedding cake. They look especially good on the all-white cakes but also work well on the more rustic-looking ones.
We absolutely loved the cheese from The Cheese Shed, and their Cakebuilder is such as great idea. If you fancy a cheese wedding cake, look no further!
