“As soon as we started planning we knew we wanted our wedding to be three things; relaxed, fun and with plenty of music. A barn on a farm felt like the perfect venue to suit all three. We decided on a vintage school fete theme as we were both school teachers and felt it would be fun and easy to make personal.
“We didn’t want our ceremony to be over and done with in 10 minutes and wanted to make it personal. As I am a drama teacher we decided to make it a mini production! Our pageboy entered with a handmade sign saying ‘Steven here comes your girl’, our bridesmaid sang our song ‘Last of the Ladies’ by the Courteeners, and after the signing of the register we insisted our guests ‘sang for their dinners’ and sang ‘Hey Jude’, which went down a storm! I’d given the ushers tambourines with luggage tags on which read ‘Play me during Hey Jude’.
“For drinks, men were given luggage label beer tokens and ladies got strawberry daiquiris out of jam jar glasses with striped straws. For our favours, Steven’s Mum makes thee most amazing jam and so handmade us a job lot using fruit from her allotment. We got an art teacher friend to design the labels, which read ‘Macbell Jam, jam that’s fruity and a little bit sticky’, and another friend to make gingham mop caps (who also made the table runners) sealed with brown string and a thank you luggage label. Prostate Cancer Charity (A charity close to our hearts) badges were given to the men, again with luggage labels saying ‘Wear with pride’… in fact the speeches sweep stake went to the same charity. We also gave all our guests a ‘Macbell High School’ prefect badge which we had specially made.
“To decorate our tables we stacked old books we got from a charity shop in the centre and put mismatched metal milk jugs filled with flowers on top. We then tied ribbon around glass milk bottles and I made some mini black boards with subject names for our table names. We wrote typical 1990’s graffiti on exercise books and filled them with our old school reports, and the table place names were mini detention slips, where every guest had their own personal detention, relating to a funny story about them.
“After the ceremony, instead of canapés we decided on a sweet and cake table we called the School Tuck Shop. We had a Head Master’s Office which was our guest book table, with a vintage typewriter where guests could leave a message on Macbell High headed paper. We also had Lost Property, where I left a vintage suitcase with lots of drama props in and some throw away cameras. The guests found them later on during the dancing which was hilarious seeing dancing sheep and horses heads on the dance floor!”
