A wedding at a vineyard — now that’s my kind of venue! Marcia and Lee enjoyed a relaxed wedding day at Holmfirth Vineyard, with wine, sun and stunning views. Working to a pink and white colour scheme they used simple styling with a few personal touches thrown in to create a beautiful wedding in one of the most picturesque settings you could wish for.

Holmfirth Vineyard, part of the Sheveling Wine Estate, is situated in the West Yorkshire countryside. Looking over Holme Valley the venue provides the perfect setting for pictures, including stunning sunset photographs with the backdrop of the rolling hills. Matt Thompson Photography did a brilliant job of capturing the day, particularly the beauty of the scenery as the couple relaxed in the sun for their portrait shots.

I just love how, by keeping their wedding styling understated, Marcia and Lee let the beauty of the setting speak for itself…

A Hint of Romance

“Lee and I met while playing darts one evening in Houston, Texas. I was a shockingly bad player but I still managed to talk to him and we became friends. We were both seeing other people at the time, but six years later we finally started dating. Shortly thereafter Lee had to move back to the UK for work, and I was left in Texas for nearly six months waiting for him to visit.

“Lee finally came back for a visit in April 2017 and popped the question that same night in our hotel room near the airport. It was very personal and private but he still got on one knee!

“Our wedding styling was pretty much dictated by the venue, Holmfirth Vineyard, which was the first part of the wedding we chose. I wouldn’t say we had a ‘theme’, rather we focused more on a mood.

“The venue is primarily indoors but surrounded by the gorgeous vineyard, and the building has glass walls so it felt like an outdoor event. We wanted our guests to feel connected to their surroundings. I would describe the style as light, airy and natural with a hint of romance, which the décor reflected.”

Classy But Sexy

“My wedding dress was a long fitted style from Stella York. I didn’t want a big ball gown, and I wanted to look classy but sexy at the same time. I completely fell in love with the invisible sleeves which had lace detailing all over, as well as the lace cut outs on the side and back of the dress.

“My maid of honour and junior bridesmaids had some freedom as I told them to pick a shade of pink to wear. Each dress was different but they looked great in pictures as they followed the same theme.

“Lee only had one groomsman, his best man, and he wore a suit of his liking. Lee wore a very unique light tweed suit in a blue shade with small colour accents when viewed up close. He loved his suit so much he’s already planning when he can wear it again!”

Fun for Everyone

“During the day the guests were free to roam the grounds while canapés and drinks were served. There was giant Connect Four and Jenga set up outside, though I think the kids may have taken them over!

“In the evening we opted for a DJ who played a little of everything — UK hits, American classics, and even some salsa music for my visiting Cuban family from the United States. We also had a photo booth that was fun for everyone!”

Uncomplicated Decor

“Our wedding colours were shades of pink and white, so my bouquet and many of the floral arrangements throughout the venue were pink and white roses with plenty of greenery in between. My maid of honour had a very similar but smaller bouquet and my four junior bridesmaids had small white flowers.

“We kept the decorations uncomplicated, with silver candelabras and flower wreaths around the base for guest tables, and smaller jugs with flowers on various tables and surfaces throughout the venue.

“I had our wedding guestbook made to look like a poster-sized version of the Marauder’s Map from Harry Potter (since I’m a huge fan!). I also ordered bottle openers in the shape of antique keys in reference to the flying key scene in the first movie.

“Our wedding cake was a three-tiered Victoria sponge cake with pink flowers and rose gold drip accents. I loved that it was in the semi naked style which made it look a bit more rustic, and it sat on top of a wooden log stand. Also the topper (which we had on the side) came with my mum from the United States!”

Memories and Emotions

“I can say so much about our photographer, but I’ll keep it simple; Matt was AMAZING! He was very laid back which made us feel relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera. I hate posing for photos, so I loved his candid style which captured the real memories and emotions of the day, all while making us look good! When you can look at a picture and it evokes exactly what you felt in that moment, you know you had a great photographer!

“I vividly remember the absolutely perfect weather which we were lucky to have, and being with all our friends and family while enjoying the most gorgeous views over Holme Valley.

“My advice to other couples would be to get most of your planning done early so you won’t have to worry about much the week before the wedding. You want to enjoy the excitement, not stress over too many last minute tasks. Also enjoy the day and don’t worry about small details that may go wrong; nobody will notice them but you!

“Prioritise your ‘must haves’ and cut out anything that doesn’t add something meaningful to your wedding day. Remember you are just beginning your lives together so you don’t want to start off in debilitating debt.”
