We absolutely love the pictures from this wedding, taken by Josh Dookhie Photography. Mike and Janis are creative and artistically talented people, and after spending time collecting ideas and vintage items, they created a wedding which was a work of art. Oh, and they planned it all in just 7 months!
“We both love spending time on little details and making things look as creative and pretty as possible, so we really wanted our wedding to reflect this. We also wanted it to be a big, fun dinner party with all of our favourite people.
“One of our favourite things about our wedding was the venue. We had both our ceremony and reception at The Exchange Community Church in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It’s such a unique spot (for Winnipeg!) and was a completely blank canvas. We were given a great deal of freedom from the church to transform it into whatever our hearts desired, and we just went nuts. We didn’t want to lock ourselves to strict wedding colours, so we left it pretty open. In the end, white was predominant, with earthy brown (lots of twine and burlap!), green, and yellow as accents.
“Mike did an amazing job with all the paper goods, designing the invites, programmes, menus, seating cards, little signs throughout the venue, dessert table descriptions, and favours. Since he was able to design everything, the design was very cohesive. It also really reflected our taste as a couple.
“Before the ceremony, we had a breakfast with our family. Josh, our photographer, joined us there and we then went on to take family photos. After that, we got all dressed up and had our first look. We went out into the country with Josh and took photos by these amazing cement cylinders.
“In between the ceremony and reception, guests were able to go to a nearby art gallery for drinks.
“At the reception, Mike and I sat at a small circular table in the middle of the room. My mom lent us an old, crocheted tablecloth to use for our table. We hung white wooden birds from the ceiling so that they were directly above our heads. We were so happy about the location of our table, because it allowed people to come and talk to us while they were going up for food or passing by.
“We had an amazing Italian dinner, compliments of Buccaccino’s (an Italian restaurant in Winnipeg). We ended the night with an epic dance party, complete with laser lights and a strobe! We left the building to a sparkler send-off and drove off in Mike’s 1989 VW convertible Cabriolet.”
