Candlelight creates the perfect ambience for a winter wedding, and this is exactly what Elizabeth and Kamal wanted for their beautiful December wedding at Queen’s College Chapel and Magdalene College, Cambridge.
Photographed by Laura McCluskey Photography, this beautiful winter wedding was styled by Elizabeth, with romantic candlelight, seasonal flowers in mismatched glass vases and each table named after the couple’s favourite authors. Elizabeth wore a classic fishtail-style Vera Wang dress and her Grandmother’s antique veil
Elizabeth explains the ideas behind the styling…
“We wanted our wedding to be festive, intimate and candlelit as much as possible. For those reasons, I chose the bridesmaids’ bouquets and dresses in jewel-like reds — purples, mulberries, crimsons — and ordered some bunting to decorate one of the reception areas in matching colours. I didn’t think about having a ‘theme’ as much as wanting the whole day to be elegant, atmospheric and, most importantly, fun. In many ways, the beauty of the venue informed the styling: the chapel and the dining hall were historic and striking and that meant I wanted my dress to be timeless, to complement rather than to detract from the setting.
“I handmade the guests’ favours — individual packets of mulled wine spices that I’d ordered online, complete with a hand-tied ribbon and hand-written luggage label — as well as the postcard pictures we had on each table showing me and my partner at different stages in our life. The cake was baked by my mother and iced by my (very creative) sister. My veil was a piece of lace from my late grandmother that I asked a local dress alterations place to sew a hair comb onto. It meant the day was even more special because there was a part of her with me as I walked down the aisle.”
