A runner-up in our 2017 Picture of the Year competition, Peter will be hoping to go one better this year with this fabulous picture. Taken at the wedding of Sammy and David in September last year, Peter explained how he got the ‘dark and moody look’ he wanted…

Something a Little Different

“David and Sammy married at St Matthew’s Church in Burnley, with their reception at The Inn on the Wharf. It was a pleasant day, so we went to the park opposite the church for most of the photographs as The Inn On The Wharf wasn’t renowned for its lovely architecture. I say ‘wasn’t’ because unfortunately the pub closed its doors the Monday after, so this was the last ever wedding reception at the venue.

“The pub backs on to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and this presented an opportunity for something a little different with the large cog from the canal lock gate. I took the picture at around 4pm so it was still light, but I wanted a dark and moody look so I adjusted the settings on my camera and placed a flash behind the couple. The result is exactly what I wanted; just enough light to illuminate the couple, with some of the light bouncing off Sammy’s dress to expose the mechanical cog.

“I really like this picture and, more importantly, so do Sammy and David.”
