Your wedding cake is more than just a dessert — it’s the centrepiece for your big day décor. With that in mind, choosing your wedding cake designer is an important decision that requires a lot of thought, care and attention.
How Will Your Cake Fit in with Your Décor Scheme?
Every wedding cake designer is different and has something unique to bring to the (cake) table. That’s not to say they can’t meet a brief, but if you’re having a rustic, vintage affair, hiring somebody who’s renowned for cutting-edge, contemporary designs might not make for the perfect partnership. Flip through magazines or browse some blogs to find somebody whose design style is on your wavelength.
Think About Your Budget
If you have a modest budget make sure you call your shortlisted suppliers and have an honest chat about prices. That way you won’t set your heart on something that’s going to be more than you’d hoped to spend.
Once you have an idea of what you like and can afford, make a shortlist of two or three local suppliers and book some tastings and consultations. Don’t overwhelm yourself by choosing too many.
Taste Before You Commit
While the design of your cake is important, at the end of the day cake is meant to be eaten! Once you’ve narrowed down some wedding cake designers whose style you love, book a cake tasting. If the product and flavour speaks for itself you’re on to a winner.
See How You Get Along
You could book the best cake designer in the world, but if you don’t get on well then working on your wedding cake isn’t going to be much fun. Have a consultation to make sure that you click, that they’re able to understand and interpret your ideas, and that they really listen to you. It’s your day, after all.

Make Your Choice
Once you’ve made your choice, check over contracts, T&Cs and payment dates, then let the other suppliers know that you’ve decided to go with another company. Don’t be afraid to give constructive feedback if you think it’s appropriate. Wedding cake designers will appreciate your honestly more than if you disappear off the radar.
