As we enter 2017 we start to look at the emerging fashion, design and interior décor trends which often influence wedding design for the year ahead. Below, I’ve summarised some of my predictions for 2017 wedding trends.
Go Green!
The Pantone Colour of the Year for 2017 is Greenery. Probably my favourite of the 2017 wedding trends, you can incorporate the colour Greenery through versatile, lush foliage. Foliage adds an interesting texture to the overall look and feel of a wedding. It also complements a whole variety of colour schemes, from delicate pastels through to bright, rich colour palettes.
You can also get the most beautiful green hydrangea blooms if you aren’t ready to ditch florals entirely for foliage. I expect we’ll see lots more statement greenery and foliage in loose, flowing arrangements.
2017 Wedding Dresses
2017 wedding dresses are all about texture; from feminine floral touches, fun feathers, and lace appliqué, to uneven hemlines and beaded embellishments. Sheer necklines are still proving popular, as are deep V-necks and the trend for the Bardot ‘off-the-shoulder’.

Mix and Match
Forget matchy-matchy! Gone are the days of bridesmaids wearing the same outfit in the same colour. Instead, dress your bridesmaids in gorgeous, flattering wrap dresses, like the Twobirds Bridesmaid dresses. They can be tied in a variety of ways so you can choose a style that works for their shape and personality.
It also looks beautiful in wedding photos if bridesmaids wear dresses in slightly different shades or complementary colours which tie in with the wedding colour palette.
Hygge
Hygge (Pronounced “hue-gah”) is the biggest buzzword at the moment. It is the Danish concept of enjoying life’s simple pleasures whilst making ordinary moments more meaningful and special.
We are seeing couples choose to strip back intricate and lavish décor, and instead adopt a more simplistic and stylish Scandi design with organic accents such as wood and lush foliage. This trend works hand in hand with Pantone’s Greenery colour of the year.
Experiential Eats
Food stations add an element of fun and interactivity to your wedding. This theatrical way of serving food is becoming popular as it adds a playful twist to the traditional three-course silver service meal.
Consider entertaining your guests with a ‘toast your own marshmallows’ firepit, with gourmet marshmallow flavours such as Blueberry and Gin, Vanilla, or Strawberry and Basil. You could have an ora sushi and seafood bar with oyster shucking. Or perhaps invite your guests to help themselves to an artistically decadent dessert station with dry ice poured over the sweet selection of delights.
Sharing starters or desserts also helps break the ice between guests that may not have met before. The Patisserie Bar and Doughnut Wall shown are my favourite interactive wedding grazing stations by Kalm Kitchen.
Party On!
More and more couples are asking for an after-party. Where possible, my advice would be to stay at the same venue as your reception for the after party. This will avoid the temptation for guests to disappear en route to another venue.
Venues are catching on to the demand and are offering underground spaces or a late night bar for a night-cap. Another popular option is a ‘silent disco’. Guests have headphones so that they can continue dancing the night away into the early hours, without loud noise disrupting the venue’s neighbours.
Marble
This big interior design and high street trend is weaving its way into 2017 wedding trends, and works well for a variety of styles — whether classic, industrial or contemporary. Just look at this incredible marble wedding cake by Sugared Saffron.
Personalisation
This trend only gets bigger and more prevalent every year. I firmly believe your wedding should reflect your personalities and style, so I promote and encourage personalisation.
You could include your initials throughout your stationery and project them onto your dance floor. Or maybe a more subtle but noticeable touch, such as writing your own vows or creating a bespoke cocktail which makes your guests think ‘that is so them’.
Just be careful of the influences of Pinterest (e.g. tea cups and jam jars — unless you love tea/jam!) and choose something that is more ‘you’.
Whether you follow the 2017 wedding trends or not, just remember that your wedding should be a reflection of you and your personalities. Don’t feel obligated to follow a trend for the sake of it if it’s not your style or taste.
